Eligible Vehicles:
B-doubles, road trains, and prime movers with low loader dolly and trailer combinations.
Licence Requirements:
To qualify for an MC licence, you must hold an HR or HC licence for at least one year. P2 HR licence time counts, but you must hold a full HR or HC licence before driving MC vehicles.
Assessment:
NSW RMS-approved training and assessment to meet competency standards. Upon successful completion, the RMS will issue your MC licence.

Rigid vehicles with three or more axles and a GVM over 8 tonnes, towed trailers up to 9 tonnes GVM, and vehicles included in the MR class.
Licence Requirements:
To qualify for the HR licence, you must have held a Class C, LR, or MR licence for at least two years.
Assessment:
NSW RMS-approved course with training and assessments by accredited assessors. Upon successful evaluation, the RMS will issue your HR licence.

Is a medical assessment required for a heavy vehicle licence?
In NSW, medical assessments are required only for Multicombination (MC) vehicle drivers (road trains).
Assessments are needed:
On the initial application.
At age 21 and every 10 years up to age 40.
Every 5 years until age 60.
Every 2 years until age 70.
Annually thereafter.
How do I obtain a heavy vehicle driver’s licence?
To obtain a heavy vehicle licence, you must:
Pass the Heavy Vehicle Knowledge Test for the licence class you’re applying for.
Complete the Heavy Vehicle Competency-Based Assessment (HVCBA) with a Registered Training Organization (RTO).
For a Multicombination (MC) licence, a medical assessment must be completed before training.
How many classes of heavy vehicle licences are there?
There are five classes of heavy vehicle licences in NSW:
LR (Light Rigid) – Small buses or trucks.
MR (Medium Rigid) – Medium rigid trucks or buses.
HR (Heavy Rigid) – Heavy rigid trucks or buses, including articulated buses.
HC (Heavy Combination) – Heavy articulated vehicles.

How much does it cost to take the Knowledge Test?
There are two types of Heavy Vehicle Knowledge Tests, based on the licence class:

Each test costs $52, and the fee applies each time you retake the test if unsuccessful.
How long are my Knowledge Test certificates valid?
The Learner’s Book is valid for 36 months.
The Eye Test certificate is valid for 12 months.
The Medical Certificate is valid for 6 months.
Can a person on a provisional licence upgrade to a higher licence classification?
Yes:
Red P-plate holders can upgrade to an MR (Medium Rigid) licence.
Green P-plate holders can upgrade to an HR (Heavy Rigid) licence.
Do I need to provide my own vehicle for the driver assessment?
You have the option to:
Provide your own or your company’s vehicle.
Use a vehicle supplied by the assessment provider.
